Minkology’s Inside Scoop
Did you know that Minkology offers fresh, locally made ice cream from Homeland Creamery year-round? Stop by for a scoop today!
Attention, dear readers: summer is calling! I’m sure you’ve felt the temperatures rising in central North Carolina over the last few weeks. If you’re like me, you’ve been soaking up the longer hours of daylight while simultaneously dreading the hundred-degree weather that is certain to follow. And, if you’re like me, you probably think there’s no better way to beat the summer heat than with a gigantic scoop (or two… maybe three…) of ice cream.
Luckily for us, Minkology has it covered! About three years ago, store owner Wendi Mink noticed that something was missing from Downtown Asheboro’s culinary line-up. Despite the downtown streets’ truly unmatched selection of coffee- and teahouses, bakeries, and restaurants, there wasn’t anywhere to go on a sunny day to devour a heaping bowl of ice cream. After hearing several customers in the shop lament the city’s lack of an ice cream parlor, Wendi decided to take matters into her own hands.
“If not us, then who?” she asked herself.
Thus, “Scoops by Mink” was born. Wendi’s husband Ross, long-time ice cream-lover and flavor aficionado, was initially prepared to begin making the ice cream in-house (my hero!), but Wendi vetoed that idea in favor of supporting small local businesses already producing ice cream products. Although it took some time to find the right fit for Minkology, the store eventually introduced Homeland Creamery’s premium soft ice cream, manufactured and packaged right down the road in Julian, NC.
Part of a farming legacy seven generations strong, Homeland Creamery prides itself on its commitment to family, sustainability, and excellent flavor. Having operated a “Grade A” dairy out of their homestead since World War II, the Bowman family survived the nation-wide overproduction crisis of the late 1990s that devastated many small dairies in rural communities and established the Homeland Creamery brand in 2000.
The creamery’s first batch of milk amounted to thirty gallons, which they sold right away to neighbors and local stores in their community. Twenty-five years later, Homeland Creamery processes over 7,000 gallons of milk per week, supplying various retailers, coffee shops, and bakeries from Winston Salem to Raleigh—such as The Table, one of Asheboro’s favorite local restaurants. Their signature products, including chocolate milk, buttermilk, heavy cream, eggnog, and of course, ice cream, are delivered as far east as Wilmington and as far west as Asheville. Unlike most store-bought ice cream products, their ice cream contains a butterfat content of 14%, resulting in an extra creamy taste.
So, if you find yourself in Downtown Asheboro and it’s hot as blazes outside—or you’re just feeling the need to satisfy your sweet tooth with a sugary treat—stop by Minkology for a double-scoop of Homeland Creamery’s premium ice cream. We regularly carry eighteen flavors, ranging from Chocolate and Vanilla to Orange Creamsicle, Blueberry Danish, and crowd-favorite Cookies & Cream. You’re welcome to mix and match—Coffee and Double Dark Chocolate, perhaps, or Strawberry and Peach—to achieve your own unique blend of flavors or keep it simple with just one.
No matter what floats your boat (or in this case, milks your dairy cow), Minkology is here to serve you!
